When most people picture a local animal shelter, they probably think of a dirty facility with overcrowded animals living in squalid conditions. Sadly, this isn't always the case. In fact, there are many wonderful, loving, cuddly, loving and caring animal shelters throughout the nation that are nothing like what you may have seen in your imagination. What do these non-shelter animals do for pets? Well, if you are looking for a way to provide a loving, forever home for furry, feathered or scaly friends, these are the places to go!

Description An animal shelter or animal pound is an area where abandoned, stray, unwanted or surplus animals are housed until they can be claimed by their rightful owners. The word "Pound" has it roots in the animal shelters of rural agricultural communities where wild livestock were pened or impounded until their owners could claim them. In modern times, Top Animal Shelters and pounds are places where animals can be spayed or neutered, adopted or simply looked over while they are getting checked over by a licensed veterinarian. A great part of the shelter/ pound is that they often have adoption or foster programs for pets looking for loving homes.

Purpose In essence, these are third party animal guardianship organizations that help pets in need find loving homes. Animals that are abandoned, neglected or mistreated may find a new home at a shelter before being put up for adoption. Many shelters even offer spaying/neutering services for pets who aren't completely done exploring their emotional and physical environments yet. They also may groom, play with and give essential medical care for the pets in need before they are adopted or put up for adoption. Many organizations strive to make sure pets get to a comfortable, healthy and safe home before being put up for adoption to an animal home.

What's Inside The facility itself will vary depending on the pet shelter you are visiting. In many cases, animals are in good health and fed, unless they are in a boarding facility. If so, the environment will be similar to a boarding kennel, with multiple dog beds, a bathroom and cat room. Other centers may have indoor and outdoor cat habitats and outdoor fenced or marked spaces for pets. Inside the facility, there will be living areas for cats and dogs, along with a safe, secure area where an animal can perform activities like running, playing, chewing or sleeping.

How To Apply To qualify for adoption, animals must meet a minimum of: current address, no harmful illnesses or inherited conditions, no history of severe abuse, and no known law violation. Each state handles adoptions differently, but some basic criteria are in place for all shelters throughout the nation. Depending on the shelter you are visiting, application requirements will vary slightly. Some shelters ask for applications to go through an online screening process or for phone interviews. Others may conduct personal interviews only. Most shelters require potential pet owners to complete a safety and animal abuse form and to volunteer to be a life-time pet caregiver.

Getting The Procedure Started When you visit an animal shelter, be prepared to get on the phone with the volunteer manager if you have questions or need information about how the process works.
